In this set of lessons, we'll build on the basics of guitar strumming technique, by adding an upstroke on an 8th note count.
We'll also work on 2 essential left hand techniques (Alternating Bass, and Bass Runs) which will give your strumming a little extra Country flavor. While these lessons are demonstrated on acoustic guitar, the same techniques may be used on electric guitar.
The techniques presented in this course are Essential Rhythm Guitar techniques, applicable to strumming the guitar in a wide variety of styles and genres. While this course presents these skills in a Country-style context, these skills are also central to Folk, Rock, Pop, and Blues as well.
Each skill you gain in this section will serve as a foundation for more techniques coming up in subsequent lessons. Therefore, it is important that you make sure you are developing good habits as regards your strumming technique. Pay close attention to the technique pointers in these lessons, and make sure you're on the right track.
The strumming pattern in this section consists of striking the bass note (lowest note) of the chord with your pick, and then in the next beat, strumming down over the remaining strings. Then, as your hand is passing by the strings to return to the bass note, let the pick graze the strings, producing an upstroke. The count should be "One, Two and", with the corresponding pick strokes being "Down, Down Up". Do this pattern twice per measure of music in 4/4 time.
In this chapter, we'll focus on playing this strumming technique in two common keys: the key of C, and the key of G.
This means you'll need to be able to play this strumming technique on the following chords: C, F, G, and D.
